Ed “Big Daddy” Roth was one of the most colorful figures in American hot rod history. In the 1960s, he became a larger-than-life spokesman for Revell and helped bring wild custom car culture to the model kit world. Roth designed and built outrageous show rods that became some of the most famous plastic model car kits ever produced.

But Roth’s creativity did not stop with cars. From his Southern California garage, he built a career pinstriping, customizing, and airbrushing wild artwork onto cars and T-shirts. It was on those T-shirts that many fans first discovered his monster characters — including the legendary Rat Fink.

Rat Fink quickly became an icon of hot rod culture: weird, funny, rebellious, and unforgettable. Along with characters like Mr. Gasser, Surfink, and Scuz-Fink, Rat Fink helped define a whole generation of monster model kits and custom car art.
