U.S.S. Forrest Sherman Destroyer Plastic Model Kit

Build a classic Cold War-era U.S. Navy destroyer with the U.S.S. Forrest Sherman plastic model kit from Atlantis Models. This highly detailed ship kit is molded in gray and measures approximately 16 inches long when complete.

Produced in 1:320 scale, this kit includes decal options for three famous Forrest Sherman-class destroyers: U.S.S. Forrest Sherman, U.S.S. Turner Joy, and U.S.S. Edson. A flag sheet is also included, giving builders additional display detail for a finished naval model.

Skill Level 2.

The Forrest Sherman-class destroyers represented the final generation of U.S. Navy “all-gun” destroyers before guided missiles became standard fleet weapons. Sleek, fast, and powerful, these ships were designed for rapid response, fleet escort duty, anti-aircraft defense, anti-submarine operations, and surface combat.

The lead ship, U.S.S. Forrest Sherman DD-931, was built by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. She was launched on February 5, 1955, and commissioned on November 9, 1955. Measuring over 418 feet long, she was capable of speeds up to 35 knots and carried a strong armament of 5-inch guns, 3-inch guns, torpedo tubes, and anti-submarine weapons.

U.S.S. Forrest Sherman served during an important period in U.S. naval history. In 1958, she patrolled the eastern Mediterranean before joining the 7th Fleet near Taiwan during tensions around Quemoy and Matsu. She later completed a cruise around the world. In 1959, Forrest Sherman took part in celebrations for the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway and served as escort to the Royal Yacht HMS Britannia, carrying President Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth II during a naval review.

Named for Admiral Forrest Sherman, who commanded the aircraft carrier Wasp during World War II and later served as Chief of Naval Operations, this destroyer represents the strength, speed, and versatility of the postwar U.S. Navy.

USS Forrest Sherman Destroyer Plastic Model Kit

Posted by DWE on Mar 3rd 2025

A follow-up to my previous post. As promised, Atlantis immediately responded to my email regarding the deck and promptly mailed replacements. 5 Star rating for their customer service! Thank you Atlantis. As for the kit, I would definitely like to see improvement in the mold quality of the parts, but there is great potential here in what is a wonderful model kit. And with the decal sheet providing hull markings for both the USS EDSON (DD 946) and USS TURNER JOY (DD 951), you can build a replica of either of the last remaining Forrest Sherman class destroyers, one of which I have a personal connection to (USS EDSON). Highly recommend this kit.

    Kit Quality

Posted by DWE on Jan 14th 2025

Right out of the box I was disappointed in the quality of the kit. Compared to the older kits I have of the same model the plastic seemed much thinner, particularly the deck which was also badly warped, increasing the challenge of assembly and requiring the deck to be glued to the hull as the first step. Lots of mold pin marks and excess flashing. Details on the deck and superstructure are very good. Overall, with care, patience, preparation of parts and attention to detail and the kit has excellent potential to yield a fine finished model. Answer from Atlantis: If anyone gets a deck that is warped we will send you a perfectly straight one --just email us thru the parts request page-thanks!

    1/320 USS Forrest Sherman

When I was a kid I used to see this model in my grandpa's shelf, and building one now as an adult, brought me great satisfaction. The level of detail at this scale is awesome, specially in the bulkheads. My model didn't have any sink holes and had minimum flash, and the decals went down nicely. Great model to build out of the box or maybe add some aftermarket and create a real eye-opener.

    DD931 Forrest Sherman

I was very glad to see a re-issue of this kit. I modified it to reflect changes to the weapons and electronics as they looked during the Vietnam War. I removed the depth charge racks and added radar antennas from a spare photo-etch set. I also replaced the molded rails with photo-etch from a generic set. I based my model on the USS Turner F. Joy as she looked in 1979 while stationed at 32nd Street Naval Station, San Diego.
