U.S.S. Bainbridge CGN-25 Nuclear-Powered Guided Missile Frigate Plastic Model Kit with Trading Card

Build a Cold War U.S. Navy legend with the Atlantis Models U.S.S. Bainbridge CGN-25 Nuclear-Powered Guided Missile Frigate plastic model kit.

This classic 1:600 scale ship kit comes from the original Aurora tooling and has not been reissued before in this Atlantis release. The kit is molded in gray and includes updated decals, a flag sheet, detailed instructions, and a brand-new collectible trading card — Number 1 in the Atlantis trading card set. The completed model measures approximately 11.75 inches long and includes 82 parts, making it an excellent choice for Cold War naval modelers, U.S. Navy collectors, Aurora kit fans, and classic plastic model builders.

The real U.S.S. Bainbridge DLGN-25/CGN-25 was one of the most important nuclear-powered surface ships in U.S. Navy history. Launched in 1961 at Bethlehem Steel’s Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, Bainbridge became the world’s first nuclear-powered frigate and was named in honor of Commodore William Bainbridge.

Bainbridge represented a new era in naval technology. She was equipped with two pressurized-water reactors, Terrier missile launchers, radar-controlled gun mounts, torpedo mounts, an ASROC launcher, and advanced electronics and communications systems. In 1964, she joined U.S.S. Enterprise and U.S.S. Long Beach to form the world’s first nuclear-powered task group. Together, the ships completed Operation Sea Orbit, a 30,565-mile, 65-day around-the-world cruise without refueling or replenishment, demonstrating the endurance and reach of nuclear-powered naval vessels.

Bainbridge later served in Vietnam-era operations, Mediterranean deployments, Pacific Fleet cruises, and Cold War missions around the world. In 1975, she was redesignated from a guided missile frigate to a guided missile cruiser, becoming CGN-25. After more than three decades of service, Bainbridge was decommissioned in 1996.

This Atlantis kit captures the sleek profile and historic character of a groundbreaking U.S. Navy warship. With its original Aurora heritage, collectible trading card, updated decals, and display-friendly size, the U.S.S. Bainbridge CGN-25 is a must-have for fans of nuclear-powered ships, Cold War naval history, and vintage model kits.

    Nice Vintage Aurora Reissue

Posted by David Nickels on Dec 9th 2024

This is a pretty old kit, but one that has not been available for fifty years. It was nice to see it finally reissued, and in a decent Aurora repro box with original instructions. The Bainbridge is relatively small kit, but nicely detailed for it's age, and being an original Aurora tooling. The one piece hull is a plus. The scale isn't the most common, but there are other 50s and 60s warship kits in 1/600 if you hunt around. Recommended if you like Cold War era warships and vintage kits.

This kit is even better than I remembered! Did you clean up the molds? Super kit, I ordered three and have already started to build one. Love this old Aurora kit!
