U.S.S. Brooke DEG-1 Guided Missile Destroyer Escort Plastic Model Kit

Build a classic Cold War U.S. Navy warship with the Atlantis Models U.S.S. Brooke DEG-1 Guided Missile Destroyer Escort plastic model kit.

This impressive 1:311 scale kit measures approximately 16 inches long when complete and includes 56 parts. Molded in light gray, the kit features a one-piece hull, display stand, helicopter, guns, missile launcher, rotating radar finders, waterslide decals, and detailed instructions. It is a great choice for ship modelers, Cold War naval history fans, and collectors of classic military model kits.

The real U.S.S. Brooke DEG-1 was the lead ship of the Brooke class and represented a major step forward in U.S. Navy escort design. Originally classified as a guided missile destroyer escort, Brooke was later redesignated FFG-1 guided missile frigate during the Navy’s 1975 ship reclassification. The Brooke class was based on the Garcia-class design but added the Tartar guided missile system, giving these ships important anti-aircraft capability in addition to their anti-submarine role.

Designed to protect amphibious forces, patrol coastal waters, and defend convoys from submarine threats, Brooke carried a powerful mix of weapons and sensors for her time. Her armament included a 5-inch gun, Tartar missile launcher, ASROC anti-submarine rocket launcher, torpedo tubes, sonar, radar systems, and helicopter capability. Later Brooke-class ships operated with the SH-2 Seasprite helicopter, expanding their anti-submarine warfare mission.

U.S.S. Brooke was built by Lockheed Shipbuilding & Construction in Seattle, Washington. She was laid down in 1962, launched in 1963, commissioned in 1966, and served until 1988. After U.S. Navy service, she was transferred to Pakistan and renamed Khaibar.

Built this model many moons ago when I was 12 years old. Didn't have an airbrush and didn't paint the gray hull and superstucture. It is a good sized model with a lot of details where I can try out new finishing skills like surface primer, washes, photo-etch and maybe weathering/streaking with enamels and enamel thinner. Thanks to the internet for showing how to do these techniques. Great to see this model available, once again!

over all this is not bad kit, even tho it is an early version of this ship. The Helo hanger is designed for unmanned drone helicopter which was not adopted by the Navy. When I was on her the helo hanger was much bigger and housed a SEA Sprite helo.

I love these older ship models. I have an old AC Carrier if the Yorktown from Lindberg with a 2 part hull. I do prefer the 1 piece hill but, as long as I can get some of these older kits, I'm in Seventh Heaven. How about some plastic Riverboat kits like from Lindberg and Revell.
