U.S.S. North Carolina BB-55 “The Showboat” Battleship Plastic Model Kit

Build one of the most famous American battleships of World War II with the Atlantis Models U.S.S. North Carolina BB-55 “The Showboat” plastic model kit.

This impressive 1:500 scale battleship kit measures approximately 17 3/4 inches long when complete and includes 144 parts. Molded in gray, the kit includes a display stand and decals for both U.S.S. North Carolina and U.S.S. Washington, giving builders the option to finish the model as either of the two famous North Carolina-class battleships.

The real U.S.S. North Carolina BB-55 was the lead ship of her class and one of the most important U.S. Navy battleships of World War II. Built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, she quickly earned the nickname “The Showboat” because of the attention she drew during fitting out and sea trials in New York Harbor.

North Carolina was the first of the Navy’s modern fast battleships and entered the Pacific in 1942. She helped protect U.S. aircraft carriers during the Guadalcanal campaign and went on to serve across the Pacific theater. The ship supported major operations in the Solomon Islands, Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, and beyond. Her powerful main battery, heavy anti-aircraft defenses, and fast battleship design made her a vital part of America’s island-hopping campaign.

During her World War II service, U.S.S. North Carolina earned 15 battle stars and participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific theater. Today, the real battleship is preserved in Wilmington, North Carolina, as a National Historic Landmark and memorial to more than 11,000 North Carolinians who gave their lives during World War II.

This Atlantis release is a great choice for ship modelers, World War II history enthusiasts, U.S. Navy collectors, and classic plastic model kit fans. With its large finished size, 144 parts, display stand, and two decal options, the U.S.S. North Carolina BB-55 “The Showboat” makes an impressive addition to any model fleet.

    USS North Carolina

Many parts, but easy to build. Very straight forward. Looks impressive when finished. The individual 16" gun barrels that can be raised separately are a plus. The underwater hull is not deep enough and does not have torpedo bulges, but is one-piece (plus a bottom hatch).

This model is nothing short of fantastic! For a 1/500 scale ship, there is plenty of detail, including the 20 and 40mm guns

I was pleased with the sharpness and cleanliness of all the parts of this model. There are a few mold sinks in a few parts, but nothing that cannot be fixed with a bit of putty. admirable for a 64 y.o. model! The model builds easily, as the parts fit nicely and little to no putty is needed to close gaps (if any). The box art shows BB-55 with the scheme used in 1943, but the model itself better depicts the USS North Carolina circa late 1944, so a change of scheme would be better fitting. If I had to find a discrepancy on this model, is the lack of spotter aircraft and related catapults. Instead, the model comes with a helicopter, but BB-55 went into mothballs before getting any helicopters. This is a great release of the old Renwal model, and although some aftermarket products can be added, this ship looks great straight out of the box.

This is a great kit. One which i waited along time to build. Becasue the kit provides decals for the the USS washington, my uncle's ship. The kit goes together quickly with minimal parts cleanup. Recommended for modelers of all ages.
