Interesting facts about Tommy Ivo and his Showboat dragster
Tommy Ivo, veteran drag racer and creator of several 'wild' machines, is credited with being the first to break the nine second mark for the quarter mile. This was accomplished with a dual engine dragster which turned an easy 162 mph at the top end. Since establishing that record in 1960, Ivo constructed many functional as well as beautiful Dragsters over the decades that followed.
Although better known for his drag racing achievements, Tommy Ivo is also well known for his entertainment work. He got the name "TV Tommy" from his many appearances in movies and television shows from the late 1940's through the 1960's. He was already a celebrity when he started building his own drag cars and racing professionally.
The most spectacular of all his creations was the "Showboat", a fiery red and gleaming chrome machine powered by four Hill born injected Buick V-8 engines. This dragster was very unique, not only for its beauty of workmanship and construction, but because of its impressive specifications. It produced a total of 1,720 horsepower from its four 454 cubic inch Buick V-8's. Despite tremendous weight, (3,555 pounds) it attained a speed of 195 mph and a time of 8.12 seconds for the quarter mile. Unfortunately the NHRA ruled it the first "exhibition" dragster, and he was unable to race it in competitions. "Showboat" was painted by Don Prudhomme and upholstered by Tony Nancy, both of whom were famous in their own right as builders and drivers of top drag racing machinery. Your Atlantis model is an authentic replica of the real Tommy Ivo "Showboat" dragster. Tommy Ivo was inducted in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2005 for his drag racing career.
